My husband hates to drink water. This has become the source of many marital tiffs. When I come home and see that the Brita has been at the same level the entire day he’s been home, I have premonitions of my sexy man crusting over and blowing away while Kansas plays “Dust In The Wind.”
I have done everything to get the man to drink water. I’ve made a large pitcher of lemon water always available to him in the fridge. I’ve even taunted him with bribes (yes, those kinds of bribes).
It’s a wonder to me that his skin stays so beautiful, especially given the fact that he has taken up the lifestyle of a damn camel in the desert. And so I got to thinking… how does he do it?
Here are 3 tips to stay hydrated when you can’t stand to drink water (courtesy of my h2o intolerant man):
1. Avoid caffeine. I know, I know- this makes me wildly unpopular now that there’s a Starbucks on every corner and we’re all walking around with Venti Skinny Caramel Macchiatos strapped to our arms like another appendage, but skipping that coffee will drastically improve our hydration potential. Now it’s true that caffeine isn’t actually as strong a diuretic as we originally thought, but it does cause you to fill up on sugary liquid and empty calories. That doesn’t exactly offer pure hydration. It also creates body sludge which impairs digestion and optimal body function. Bottom line- Skip the soda and the Starbucks.
2. Drink smoothies and juices. That glow everyone is sporting on the red carpet this season isn’t the newest shade of blushing balm from the MAC counter. It’s the gorgeous glow of hydrated skin, and many stars achieve that look by reaching for smoothies and juices. True beauty starts on the inside. And the good news is, it’s perfect for someone who doesn’t like to drink a lot of water, because fruits and vegetables have already done all the water-drinking for you, Lazy! They’re storing all that delicious liquid in their cells and just waiting to be thrown into your Vitamix. Bottom line- When you drink fresh fruit and vegetable juice, you are also taking in all the water it they have consumed before they were harvested.
3. Keep fresh fruit slices in your refrigerator. When looking for a quick snack or running out the door to work, you’re more likely to reach for something that has been prepared to look good and set aside in the fridge. Stock up on watermelon, honeydew, pineapples, cucumbers, beets, peaches, grapes or anything that can be picked off a vine, tree or bush. Then slice it, dice it and bag it baby. Bottom line- Fruit makes water retention look sexy.
Extra Credit Bonus Tip:
For those who aren’t completely h2o intolerant, commit to drinking water first thing in the morning. Our bodies work really hard all through the night cleansing, beautifying, detoxifying and expelling lots of gunk from our systems. So the last thing we should reach for after our feet hit the floor is a cup o’ joe. Replenishing our bods with pure water upon rising is the best way to ensure we start the day off on the right foot. Adding half a lemon to a warm cup of water will not only hydrate you but also alkalize your body so you start the day off with proper pH balance.
