Honoring the Holiday Spirit in the Wake of the Connecticut Tragedy

by Erin on December 18, 2012

I have spent my entire life surrounded by children. The thing about kids is they have so many secrets. They know things that we’ve all forgotten or swept under the rugs of our minds. These little ones… they haven’t yet lost this knowledge.

For instance, they know without a doubt there is a Santa Claus. Fairies not only exist but they are more beautiful than you can ever imagine and if you happen to catch a glimpse of them hiding in the trees or peeking out from underneath their flower beds, you will be caught breathless and once again become a believer.

Our children know that ringing bells can stir up miraculous things like angels and wings and that mermaids are real- end of story. There is magic in their make-believe, whimsy in their wonder, and summoning power in the celebration of this game called Life.

During this week when we honor the lives of so many babies lost in Connecticut, it is important to also honor the magical truths they held so dear to their hearts. Please remember that the Spirit of Santa is indeed real and that only one night’s worth of oil can burn for eight. Please contemplate the stars and watch the moon for evidence of sleigh crossings. Sniff the air for the scent of impending snow.

Remember to discuss dinosaurs and wooly mammoths on a regular basis and to build living room forts on a cold Saturday afternoon. Remember to dance because it feels good, not because you look good. And please make sure to climb a tree and swing on a swing set whenever you happen across one.

Can you find this magic in your life? This is the perfect season to try. Can you remember that life is precious and miraculous, even when it’s dark and scary? Can you remember that bedtime prayers are just as important as goodnight kisses?

Let’s honor the spirit of this Season of Miracles with a bit of playfulness and joy. Find your inner child and ask her what she’d like to do. If you need help finding or talking to her, seek out the help of an expert… ask a kid.

After all, we too once saw this world as a magical playground and a place to be discovered and delighted in. So this week, dust off the stuffy old reality of adulthood, and bring some sparkle back to your world. I know there are twenty new angels in heaven that would just love to play this game with you.

Do you believe in their magic?

Please join me in this discussion by leaving a comment below. Feel free to honor your loved ones who have crossed over by telling us about a magical memory you have of them during their time on Earth.

Bright blessings!

When I was a little girl, my family lived right around the corner from my grandparents. It was amazing because we got to hang out with them so much. Well, one afternoon during Christmas time, we were taking a nap at Grandma and Papa’s house when all of a sudden, as loud as can be, a booming “Ho Ho Ho!” echoed across the town. My sister and I leaped out of bed and ran to the windows looking to the sky. Nothing. We ran downstairs where everyone was a flutter. We were all looking for… him. No one ever found out where the sound came from. The story even made it into the newspaper the next morning! I truly believe to this day that Santa Claus flew over our town that afternoon. That is one of the magical memories I shared with my beloved grandparents before they got their angel wings. Can’t wait to read your stories!

Haha, what naughty and mischievous boys you were, Spero! I can imagine how hard you must’ve been laughing to see your cousin show up late to Christmas eve. Thanks for painting such a fun picture for us, my love!

Oh my goodness, I’ve experienced SO much magic in my life that I don’t even know where to begin! But to honor my grandpa Huynh (my mom’s daddy), I have this story of magic…

My grandpa Huynh came over to live in Oklahoma many years after his children left when Saigon fell in the Vietnam war. I never knew him very well – just that he had a kind face and liked when I said things to him (he didn’t speak English so I think it made him smile to think I was trying to connect in my weird hand gesture way).

As I said, he and I were never that close, so when I had my first hypnotherapy session years ago I was (pleasantly) surprised when I invited in my guides during the session and lo and behold who shows up but my grandpa!

He had such a wise and sweet demeanor that I was able to learn so much from him during that meditation, even without being able to say a word to each other.

When he passed over, the grief hit me pretty hard in that moment, but I also felt a peace in knowing that he was ready to move on to what was next for him.

That *is* magical Sabrina! Grandpa Hyunh sounds like a wonderful Spirit who is still communicating with you from the Other Side. And how perfect is it that you two can meet during meditation and hypnosis when words don’t matter at all! Thanks for sharing such a beautiful memory with us!

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE this writing, Erin!! It is absolutely beautiful and a wonderful perspective on a way to remember…so much…and so many.

My earliest magical Christmas moment happened when I was very young (under 6 years old) and we were at church. The preacher was preaching against the evils of Santa (lol) and to accentuate his point he played the song, “Here Comes Santa Claus”…which excited me immensely. I promptly jumped up and down and exclaimed quite loudly, “Santa is here! Santa is here!” and looked around the church expecting him to appear bringing me toys! My parents were trying desperately to ‘shoosh’ me and they were very embarrassed!!!! I was very disappointed that he wasn’t at the church to deliver toys!

Oh hahaha! What an adorable story, Auset! I can just picture your joy shattering the silence of that church and your parents blushing. As I recall, the lyrics say, “Santa Claus knows we’re all God’s children if we follow the light…” Wonder how the preacher explained that one? Thanks for sharing this wonderful, magical memory.
